Monaco Residence Card

With its high level of security, education and medical facilities, as well as its proximity to Nice airport, Monaco is one of the most prestigious residences in the world.

Who is concerned?

A residence permit (formerly a resident's permit) is required for any person aged 16 or over staying in Monaco for more than 3 months. The application must be made to the Monegasque authorities. It allows free movement within the Schengen area.
For persons under 16 years of age who are not covered by this residence permit, a circulation document for foreign minors may be issued.
 

Different residence cards in Monaco

Four categories of residence cards can be issued. These are as follows
  • The "temporary" category: valid for one year, it can be issued without any residence seniority requirement.
  • The "ordinary" category: this residence card can be issued to persons with a total of 3 years of residence, and is valid for 3 years.
  • The "privileged" category: concerns persons with a total of 10 years' residence with an effective presence on Monegasque territory. It is valid for 10 years.
  • And the "spouse of a Monegasque" category, issued to any person who is the spouse of a Monegasque national and has been resident in the Principality for at least one year. It is valid for 5 years.
 

Cost of the residence permit in Monaco:

The cost of the residence permit depends on its category: 80 euros for temporary residents and spouses of Monegasque nationals, 100 euros for ordinary residents and 160 euros for privileged residents.
It should be noted that there is a charge for the renewal of residence cards (half of the issuing fee).
 

What are the conditions?

To apply for a Monegasque residence permit, you must provide proof of
  • a home in Monaco,
  • sufficient financial resources, and
  • good character (including a clean criminal record).
Non-EU/EEA nationals must also obtain a long-stay visa.


The procedure of residence in Monaco:

The application must be made to the Monegasque authorities. The applicant must also undergo a personal interview with the Public Security Officer.
Allow 9 to 12 weeks between the application and the issuance of the residence permit.

How to obtain nationality in Monaco :

In Monaco, there is (almost) no acquisition of nationality linked to birth or residence.
Under the following conditions, a child is Monegasque by right on the day of his birth if he is born :
- of a father of Monegasque nationality ;
- of a Monegasque mother ;
- in Monaco of unknown parents.
The husband or wife of a Monegasque may claim Monegasque nationality in certain cases after 20 years of marriage.
